Name: Jennifer Khwela Age: 18 Height: 145cm Start Discipline: 2001 National teams since: 2006 Club: Thekwini Gym Best apparatus: Vault Favourite trick: Jaeger Jennifer is rumoured to have been inspired to start gymnastics after watching the 2000 Olympics. In 2001, she was spotted in a talent scouting session at the Carrington Heights Primary school and was taken under the wing of Coach Julie Adamson. Jennifer became the first black Senior National Champion in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics at the 2008 South African Gymnastic Games which where held in Cape Town. As such, she represents a realistic chance to representing South Africa at the 2012 London Olympics. Having competed at the recent 41st Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, Jennifer has been exposed to the highest level of competition. A talented vaulter, she placed 4th amongst the Commonwealth Gymnasts in the World Championships and ranks 22nd in the World Vaulting Rankings. Jennifer, came 3rd overall in the Senior Women All round competition at the recent 10th African Gymnastics Championship in March 2010 in Walvis Bay Namibia. She also claimed gold in the finals of the Vault and Floor. She continues to elevate her status winning the gold medal at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup A Doha in Vaulting which was held in late March 2010. 1st Photograph: FIG (©) |
